Breanne Elbourn - Finding Home
When we think of home, we often evoke cozy words of comfort, safety, warmth. However, home is also a place of vulnerability: a place to hide and suppress any fears and long standing anxieties, or it could even be the source of those fears and anxieties. This dynamic can lead to one not feeling ‘home’ within themself as they grow to learn to repress any innate passions and desires. ‘Finding Home’ is a self-portrait series depicting photographer Bre Elbourn’s journey of self-acceptance, self-compassion, and self-rediscovery through meditation. These images, in a sense, reflect the photographer’s ever-changing emotional well-being. Each diptic is a one-minute exposure at the beginning and end of the meditation practice. Long exposures are used to show the progression of time and to capture any of the photographer's movements. Interestingly, the portraits seem to reflect a state of chaos in the beginning of the practice vs. a more calm and stoic stature come the end.
