“Somewhere down here there is a cask of Amontillado.” So said this thin voice as I pressed through the undergrowth to the catacomb. Driven by the thought that I could lose some precious thing and ignoring the shrill call to turn back, I pushed on. Darkness swallowed and I was led by the sound of a distant echoing drip. Finally, with torn palms and bruised knees I came to an arched cavern lit by dim lights. All progress was halted by a perfectly still lake. Testing the waters, I took my last coin and threw it in…
The hero’s journey often involves a frightening passage through a cave or labyrinth and is usually emblematic of the protagonist’s inner journey into the subconscious mind or the soul.
After graduating art school, I was too fearful of living in poverty to seriously pursue a career in fine art, opting instead for the safer path of carpentry. With the passage of time, while navigating the maze of life, I find that the fear of change is less than the pain of staying the same. Now my greatest fear is to die in without having placed in the world the unique expressions of my artistic soul. This painting symbolizes that path and reveals that the most fearful journeys can lead to the most beautiful places.
